The Whittier chronicle and homestead records

Before the boulevards paved over the slopes of the Puente Hills, these orchards ran thick with citrus, walnut boughs, and Quaker quietude.

The Pickering Parcel

Quaker roots beneath the Puente Hills

Established in May 1887 by members of the Society of Friends, the original township was carved from the Pickering Land and Water Company purchase. Early homesteaders found rich alluvial soil perfectly suited for English walnuts and Valencia oranges.

We record these names and deeds not to romanticize the hardships of early settlement, but to remember whose hands first broke this ground.

Archival Duty

History in Whittier is not buried in town hall vaults; it lingers in the grain of craftsman porches along Painter Avenue.
